The Montana Director of Agriculture is a state executive position in the Montana state government.

The Director oversees the Department of Agriculture, whose mission statement is "to protect producers and consumers, and to enhance and develop agriculture and allied industries."[1]

Current officeholder

The current officeholder is Ron de Yong. He was appointed by Gov. Brian Schweitzer in 2007.

Authority

The state Constitution establishes a Department of Agriculture in Article XII, the Executive Department.

Under Article XII, Section 1:

The legislature shall provide for a Department of Agriculture and enact laws and provide appropriations to protect, enhance, and develop all agriculture.

Appointments

Per 2-15-111 of the Montana Code, the Director is appointed by the Governor with confirmation of the Senate. The director serves at the pleasure of the Governor and may be removed at any time.[2]

Compensation

In 2010, the Montana Director of Agriculture was paid an estimated $96,972 according to the Council of State Governments.[3]
