Chanel Nine News discovered 1,636 registered voters in Central Florida are dead. Although most of these people never show up to vote, a few of them did in the 2006 election. Marjorie Branch died in 2004, yet voted in the 2006 election. Jim Branch, her son has tried to get her name removed from the voter rolls, however it is a difficult process. [1]
Why does this happen?
According to Volusia County Supervisor of Elections Ann McFall it is much more difficult to remove people from the voter rolls once they pass away. "We had two people who did nothing but cut obituary notices out of the papers," she said. "That's how we found out someone died. But 2002's Help America Vote act, which made it easier to register to vote, also made it more difficult to remove voters from the rolls." Election Supervisors are trying to influence the legislature to accept death certificates from the family members of the deceased as evidence needed to remove voters from the rolls. [1]
