The Nevada Director of Agriculture is a state executive position in the Nevada state government.

The Director oversees the Department of Agriculture whose stated mission is "to benefit the welfare of all persons residing in the state by encouraging the advancement and protection of Nevada's agriculture and related Industries."[1]

Current officeholder

The current officeholder is Jim Barbee. He was officially appointed to the position on June 8, 2011.


The Department of Agriculture is created under 561.035 of the Nevada Revised Statutes. The office of director is established under 561.115.[2]


In order to service as Director of Agriculture, a candidate must:[3]

  • Be a graduate of an accredited colleges or university
  • Have at least five years experience in official agriculture or livestock regulatory work, public administration, accounting or business administration


Per 561.115 of the Nevada Revised Statutes, the State Board of Agriculture appoints the Director of Agriculture with the consent of the governor. The commissioner serves at the pleasure of the governor. His or her term expires at the end of the governor's term or if the governor vacates office.[4]


In the event of a vacancy, the position is filled with an appointment by the State Board of Agriculture with the consent of the governor.
