Democrats lost their "super-majority" in the state assembly, which means the Republicans will be able sustain the Governor's vetos and will be able to stop the tax increases favored by most state Democrats.

The "magic number" for Republicans to break the super-majority was 15. With wins by Mark Sherwood in Assembly District 21, Pete Livermore in Assembly District 40 the GOP was able to break the strangle hold on the state assembly.

Even though more than 52% of the votes cast for Nevada Assembly races in 2008 were for Republicans, less than 1/3 of the seats were represented by Republicans. By obtaining 16 votes, and the Governor's mansion in 2010, the Republicans have the power to veto any Democrat plan to gerrymander assembly districts.

Majority control

Heading into the November 2 election, the Democratic Party held the majority in the Nevada State Assembly:

Term limits

See also: State legislatures with term limits

2010 is the first year that some Nevada State Representatives were ineligible to run for office because of the term limits law first passed in 1994.

Nevada voters approved Question 9A in 1996. Question 9A was a second vote on a term limits amendment first approved in 1994. Alone among the states with ballot initiatives, Nevada voters must approve a proposed constitutional amendment twice before it goes into the Nevada Constitution. The 1994 and 1996 votes cumulatively led to Paragraph 2 of Section 3 of Article 4 of the Nevada Constitution, which says, "No person may be elected or appointed as a member of the Assembly who has served in that Office, or at the expiration of his current term if he is so serving will have served, 12 years or more, from any district of this State."

10 Nevada State Representatives termed-out in 2010. This is24% of the state's 42 state representatives.

In addition to the 10 Nevada state representatives who left office because of term limits, 5 Nevada state senators were also termed-out.

Nevada state representatives whose seats were up for election in 2010 but who were unable to run because of the state's term limits are:

Democrats (9):

Republicans (1):
