The New Jersey State Auditor is a state legislative position in the New Jersey state government originally established in 1934. The office is independent of the executive and judicial branches of government.[1]
The state office is required to conduct post-audits of all transactions and accounts for all New Jersey departments, offices, and agencies.[1]
Current officeholder
The current officeholder is Stephen Eells. He has served in this position since 2001.[1]
Authority
The state Constitution addresses the office of the state auditor in Article V, the Executive.
Under Article VII, Section I (6):

Appointments
The state auditor is appointed by the New Jersey Legislature to a five-year term.
Compensation
In 2010, the New Jersey State Auditor was paid an estimated $139,000 according to the Council of State Governments.[2]
