New Mexico senator demands mineral payments May 13, 2013

New Mexico

By Joel Williams

Santa Fe, New Mexico: United States Senator Tom Udall (D) has called for the federal government to restore nearly $110 million worth of cuts to a federal mineral payment plan. Under the Mineral Leasing Act, the federal government must split its revenue from the sale of minerals mined on federal lands with the states. This program provides $25 million annually to New Mexico, where Udall claims it funds the public education system. Udall is joined Sens. Mike Enzi and John Barrasso, Republicans from Wyoming, in his attempt to pass legislation preventing the cuts.[1]
