The 16th congressional district of New York will hold an election for the U.S. House of Representatives on November 6, 2012.
This is the 16th congressional district prior to the 2011 redistricting.

Candidates wishing to run must file by the signature filing deadline June 12, 2012. On January 27, 2012, Judge Gary Sharpe moved the primary date from September 11, 2012 to June 26, 2012 in order to allow for sufficient time to send absentee ballots to military voters.[1]

Heading into the election the incumbent is Jose E. Serrano (D), who was first elected to the House in 1990.

Following the results of the 2010 Census, New York lost two congressional seats, bringing its total number of representatives down from 29 to 27. A new map has yet to be finalized. According to a report in the Washington Post political blog "The Fix," New York is one of the top 10 redistricting battles in the nation.[2]

On November 2, 2010, Jose E. Serrano was re-elected to the United States House for an eleventh term. He defeated Frank Della Valle (R who also ran on the Conservative Party ticket).[3]
