The New York Commissioner of Environmental Conservation is a state executive position in the New York state government.

The commissioner serves as head of the Department of Environmental Conservation. The mission of the Department is "To conserve, improve and protect New York's natural resources and environment and to prevent, abate and control water, land and air pollution, in order to enhance the health, safety and welfare of the people of the state and their overall economic and social well-being."[1]

The current officeholder is Joe Martens. He was appointed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2011.

Authority

The Department of Environmental Conservation was originally created by chapter 140 of the laws of 1970. It is established in the New York Code.[2]

The Department of Environmental Conservation, which was established by chapter 140 of the Laws of 1970, is hereby continued, and all the powers, functions, duties and obligations possessed by the department pursuant to such chapter immediately preceding the effective date of this chapter are hereby continued.
