The Secretary of State for New York is an executive cabinet officer for the state of New York. The secretary of state is responsible for the regulation of a number of businesses and professions, including private investigators, cosmetologists, real estate brokers and appraisers, and notaries public. The secretary also regulates cemeteries, registers corporations and business organizations, and maintains business records under the Uniform Commercial Code and other laws.

The secretary's office includes the Office of Local Government Services, which provides training assistance to local governments in areas such as fire prevention, coastal management, and code enforcement.

The current officeholder is Cesar Perales. He was confirmed unanimously by the New York State Senate on June 7, 2011.[1]

Duties

The Secretary of State serves as the head of the Department of State. The department is tasked with a variety of duties, including:[3]
