Welcome to North Dakota on Ballotpedia!

Having achieved statehood in 1889, North Dakota was the 39th state admitted to the Union. Located in the upper Midwest, North Dakota borders Minnesota, South Dakota, Montana and the provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba of Canada to the north. Although North Dakota’s capital is Bismarck, the largest city in North Dakota is Fargo. Currently, there are two members of the U.S. Senate, one Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives, 47 members of the North Dakota State Senate and 94 members of the North Dakota House of Representatives. As of September 2013, North Dakota is one of 24 Republican state government trifectas.
