Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District is a school district in California that serves the city of Norwalk, California. It is the 73rd largest school district in California, serving 15,515 students in 18 schools with an operating budget of $144.7 million.[1][2]

Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District is located in southcentral Los Angeles County, California in Norwalk, California. It is located in the largest county in California. According to the 2010 Census, it is home to 105,549 residents.[3]

Demographics

Norwalk underperforms the rest of California when measured on the basis of median household income, percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a Bachelor's degree and percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a high school diploma and percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a high school diploma. Norwalk outperforms the rest of California when measured on the basis of percentage of residents living below the poverty level. The median household income in Norwalk was $60,090 compared to $61,632 for the state of California. 15.1% of Norwalk residents aged 25 years and older attained a Bachelor's degree compared to a 30.2 in California. The United States Census also showed the poverty rate in Norwalk was 11.1% compared to 14.4% for the entire state. The United States Census also found that 71.8% of Norwalk residents aged 25 years and older attained a high school degree compared to a 80.8% in California.[4]

Superintendent

Ruth Perez is currently serving as the Superintendent of Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District. She has served in this position since April 2009. Perez earned her Bachelor's degree from the Queens College of the City, University of New York, and her Master's and doctoral degrees from Nova Southeastern University.[7]

==Academic performance==

California's Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) program, which includes the California Standards Tests (CST), the California Modified Assessment (CMA) and the California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA), measures the achievement of California content standards for grades 2-11. STAR results include English and mathematics in grades 2-11, science in grades 5 and 8-11 and history/social science in grades 8, 10 and 11. In high school, math and science tests reflect the course in which the student is enrolled. There are five STAR benchmarks to indicate a student's proficiency. "Proficient" or "Advanced" indicates that a student is meeting or exceeding state standards, which is the desired achievement goal for all students.
