Welcome to Ohio on Ballotpedia!


Located in the Midwestern United States, Ohio is bordered by Indiana, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Michigan, Kentucky and Canada. The state capital and also largest city is Columbus. Nicknamed “the Buckeye state,” Ohio was originally partitioned from the Northwest Territory before becoming the 17th state admitted to the Union. Currently, there are two members of the U.S. Senate, a total of sixteen members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 33 members of the Ohio State Senate and 99 members of the Ohio House of Representatives. As of September 2013, Ohio is one of 24 Republican state government trifectas.

The structure of the Ohio judicial system is laid out in Article IV of the state constitution. The state court system is made up of the Ohio Supreme Court, twelve Ohio District Courts of Appeal, the Ohio Courts of Common Pleas, the Ohio County Courts, the Ohio Municipal Courts and the Ohio Court of Claims.


The federal court system is made up of the Northern District Court of Ohio, the Southern District Court of Ohio, the Northern District of Ohio Bankruptcy Court and the Southern District of Ohio Bankruptcy Court. Appeals from these courts go to the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
