The current officeholder is Richard Cordray.
Duties
The attorney general has three specific duties:
- the lawyer for the State of Ohio and its departments, boards and agencies and is responsible for the collection of debts owed to the state
- enforcement authority in consumer protection, charitable solicitation, antitrust actions and organized crime
- the office works with local law enforcement agencies at their request and provides criminal justice support services
Role in the initiative process
A written petition must be signed by 1000 electors before being submitted to the attorney general with the full text and summary of the proposed statute. The attorney general will certify if the ballot summary is a fair and truthful statement.
The attorney general is then required to forward the petition to the Ohio Ballot Board for its approval. If the Ohio Ballot Board certifies the petition, a verified copy of the statute, together with its summary and Attorney General's certification must then be filed with the state secretary of state by the attorney general.
