The Oklahoma Department of Education oversees public K-12 education and public libraries in Oklahoma. Following the ratification of the Oklahoma Constitution in 1907, the governor, secretary of state and the attorney general of Oklahoma served as the State Board of Education. The Department in its current iteration was created by the Oklahoma School Code of 1971, which also established the Oklahoma State Board of Education.[2] The department managed 1,831 schools serving 666,150 K-12 students during the 2012-13 school year.[3]
