Pablo Olivera was a 2013 Unity is Strength Party candidate seeking election to the U.S. Senate from New Jersey.[1] He was defeated in the general election on October 16, 2013.[2]

Olivera was a 2013 Independent candidate for District 29 of the New Jersey State Senate.[3]

Olivera received his B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from Montclair State University in 1986, his M.P.A in Health Administration from Rutger's University in 1989 and his M.E. in Administration from Saint Peter's College in 2001. His professional experience includes working as a general manager for Oswald Dental Lab, Inc. and as a teacher with Belleville Public Schools.[4]

Challenge to election

On October 16, 2013, five of the Independent candidates filed a petition with the secretary of the Senate challenging the special election.[5]

The complaint questions the constitutionality, legality and validity of the election on three main issues, and it sought to have the full Senate vote to label the election result “void.”[5]

The candidates claimed three issues with the election should invalidate it: The use of electronic voting machines with no paper backup that will not be “impounded,” that independent candidates were not included in the two debates and that the Republican candidate appeared in the first two spaces on ballots, despite a low turnout during the primary.[5]

The petition also sought to have the Senate vote to keep Jeffrey Chiesa, who was appointed following the death of Frank Lautenberg, in office until the petition was investigated and decided.[5]
