Pam Stewart is the interim Florida Commissioner of Education following Tony Bennett's resignation on August 1st.[1] Stewart was also the interim Florida Commissioner of Education from September 1, 2012 to January 14, 2013.[2]


Stewart began her career as a teacher in 1975, including working as an elementary school teacher in Ward-Highlands. From there she went on to become a guidance counselor, district teaching specialist, assistant principal, and principal. From 2004-2009 Stewart served as Deputy Chancellor for Educator Quality at the Florida Department of Education. She then became Deputy Superintendent for Academic Services for the St. Johns County School District. In 2011, she returned to the state Department of Education to become Chancellor of Public Schools.[2]

Political career

Florida Commissioner of Education (2012-2013, 2013-present)

Steward served as interim Florida Commissioner of Education from September 1, 2012 to January 14, 2013. She was replaced by Tony Bennett, the former Republican Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction.[3] Bennett subsequently resigned from the commissioner post, effective August 1, 2013, and Stewart was reinstated as interim commissioner, for an indefinite period beginning September 1.

Stewart was appointed as interim Florida Commissioner of Education on August 2, 2012 by the state Board of Education. She was named to the position to replace Gerard Robinson who resigned effective August 31, 2012 after serving in the position for a little over a year.[4] On August 1, 2013, she was reappointed to the position following the abrupt resignation of Robinson's permanent replacement, Tony Bennett.
