Due to Florida term limits, Patterson did not run for re-election in the Florida House of Representatives elections of 2010.
Patterson currently works as a Senior Account Agent with the Allstate Insurance Company. He has previously worked as an elementary teacher, and served in the United States Navy.
He is a member of many organizations, including American Legion Post 127, DeLand Lodge 1463 - Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, Daytona Beach Association of Life Underwriters, DeLand Chamber of Commerce, Lake Winnemissett Civic Association, and the Orange City Chamber of Commerce.

Patterson ran in the 2012 election for Florida State Senate District 8. Patterson is running against Dorothy Hukill in the Republican primary on August 14, 2012. The general election took place on November 6, 2012.
On November 4, 2008, Patterson won re-election to the Florida House of Representatives from Florida's 26th District, defeating Barry Flynn (D). Patterson received 46,268 votes in the election while Flynn received 34,401 votes. Patterson raised $198,703 for his campaign; Flynn raised $64,602.
