Maher was a candidate for County Legislator in 2011. She won the Democratic Primary by 60%, but lost in the general election.
Maher received a master's degree from Hofstra University. She was the Director of Development and Community Education for both Nassau and Suffolk Counties and was in charge of educating the public about seizure disorders.
Maher ran in the 2014 election for the U.S. House to represent New York's 2nd District. Maher ran uncontested for the Democratic nomination in the primary on June 24, 2014. The general election took place November 4, 2014.
