Colbeck has more than 20 years of professional experience in the Aerospace, Defense, Pharmaceutical, Healthcare, Telecommunications, Automotive, Information Technology and financial services fields. Alongside his work as a Senator, Colbeck is an independent management consultant and president of Perspective Shifts, LLC since 2004. In 2007, Patrick formed Tek Made Easy, a web hosting services company.
Colbeck graduated from the University of Michigan with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Aerospace Engineering. He has also studied at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Michigan State University, and the International Space University in Strasbourg, France.
In the 2011-2012 legislative session, Colbeck has been appointed to these committees:

Colbeck won election to the 7th District of the Michigan State Senate in 2010. He defeated Democrat Kathleen Law, Libertarian Marlin Brandys, and Independents Michael Kheibari and John Stewart in the November 2 general election.
