Clemente is a CPA, and worked for the firm Coopers & Lybrand before becoming a Representative. Paul also is the former co-owner and manager of Clemente's Bar, Restaurant and Bowling Alley, a family owned business started by his parents. The venture closed its doors in 2010, after a 60 year run.

Clemente won re-election in the 2012 election for Michigan House of Representatives District 14. He ran unopposed in the August 7 Democratic primary and defeated Edward Gubics (R) and Loel Robert Gnadt (L) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.

Clemente won election to the District 14 Seat in 2010. He defeated Brittany Guerriero, Frank Liberati, Rebecca Sarazin and Frank Vaslo in the August 3 Democratic primary. He defeated Patrick O'Connell (R) in the general election on November 2, 2010.
