Peter Courtney (b. June 18, 1943) has been a Democratic member of the Oregon Senate since 1998, representing the 11th district. He is currently the Senate President.
Education
Courtney earned his BA from the University of Rhode Island in 1965. He then received his MPA in 1966. He then earned his JD from Boston University in 1969.
Professional experience
Courtney worked as a professor for Western Oregon University. He has also worked as a political commentator for KPTV-12 Portland/KSLM Radio Salem.
Political experience
Courtney served as Councilman for Salem City Council from 1974 to 1980. He served in the Oregon State House of Representatives in 1981, 1983, and from 1989 to 1998. During this time he served as House Democratic Leader. Courtney joined the Oregon State Senate in 1998. He began serving as Senate President in 2003. He has served in this position since, representing the 11th district.

Policy positions
