Cownie has been a Staff Member of the Iowa Senate Republican Caucus, Legislative Analyst for the Iowa State Senate, and a Scheduling and Advance Assistant to United States Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta.
He is a volunteer with the Boys and Girls Club, Bull Moose Club, and Variety Club of Central Iowa. Cownie is also President of the Junior Achievement of Central Iowa, member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and Director of the West Des Moines Community Enrichment Foundation.

Cownie is running for re-election to the 60th District Seat in 2010 against Alan R. Koslow (D). Cownie had no opposition in the Republican primary. The general election takes place on November 2, 2010.
