Cownie has been a Staff Member of the Iowa Senate Republican Caucus, Legislative Analyst for the Iowa State Senate, and a Scheduling and Advance Assistant to United States Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta.
He is a volunteer with the Boys and Girls Club, Bull Moose Club, and Variety Club of Central Iowa. Cownie is also President of the Junior Achievement of Central Iowa of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and Director of the West Des Moines Community Enrichment Foundation.
