Ballotpedia's 2014 Recall Analysis

There were a total of 190 recall efforts targeting 388 public officials tracked by Ballotpedia in 2014. Of these recall efforts, 36 (18.9 percent) were approved and 25 (13.2 percent) were defeated. There were also 17 recall efforts (8.9 percent) where at least one official was recalled and one official was retained. Seventy-four (38.9 percent) recalls were initiated but did not reach the ballot. A total of 93 (48.9 percent) recalls were still underway at the time of publication and 16 (8.4 percent) recalls were made public but petitions had not been circulated. Recall efforts for special districts were the most successful in 2014, with 16 out of 20 (80 percent) officials up for recall removed from office.

Targets of recall efforts in 2014 broke down into the following categories: 66 city council members, 44 mayors, 35 school board members, 18 special district officials, 17 city officials, five county commissioners, one county official, one state legislator and one state executive.
