Human fetuses in food

In January 2012, Shortey introduced legislation to ban the use of aborted human fetuses in food.[2] Shortey told members of the media that he had conducted Internet research which led him to believe a ban was necessary. The United States Food and Drug Administration said it is unaware of any concern. Specifically, the legislation would prohibit the manufacture or sale of any food in which aborted fetuses were used in developing any of the ingredients. Shortey said that he is not aware of any Oklahoma companies that do use aborted human fetuses.[3]

The legislation -- SB 1418 -- received first reading on February 6, 2012.
