Vulakovich won a special election for Pennsylvania State Senate District 40, defeating Sharon Brown (D) and Don Bindas (I) in the special election on August 7, 2012. The seat was vacant following Jane Orie's resignation after her conviction on 14 criminal counts.[2][3][4]

Vulakovich ran in the 2012 election for Pennsylvania House District 30. Vulakovich ran unchallenged in the Republican primary on April 24. However, Vulakovich had to be replaced when he won a special election to the state Senate on August 7, 2012. [5][6]
