Recall of the Bull Shoals City Council, Arkansas (2011)
An effort to recall four members of the Bull Shoals City Council was launched in January 2011. Mayor Bruce Powell was the target of a simultaneous recall effort. An Arkansas state law prevents citizens from recalling elected officials until they have been in office for six months. The effort did not result in a recall election.
Reasons for recall
Bull Shoals resident Phil Friese was a leader of the recall effort. At a city council meeting in January 2011, Friese requested the resignation of Mayor Powell and four of the town's six city council members. Friese said that he had a petition with nearly 400 signatures. He accused the targeted officials of being indifferent to constituent wishes and "turning their backs" on citizens. Mayor Powell's termination of Police Chief Dave Horchkiss was a catalyst for the recall effort.
