Heddleston received a B.A. in Economics from Virginia Military Institute. He later obtained a M.B.A. from Emory University. Heddleston was a Senior Vice President at Science Applications International Corporation. He is currently a Managing Director for Defense and Government at The Louthan Group. Heddleston served for 26 years in the United States Air Force.

Heddleston and his wife, Carol, have three children and four grandchildren. They currently reside in Woodbridge, Virginia.
