Welcome to Rhode Island on Ballotpedia!

Located in the New England region of the United States, Rhode Island is officially known as the “State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.” Bordered by Massachusetts, Connecticut and the Atlantic Ocean, Rhode Island is the smallest state in the United States. Nicknamed “the Ocean state,” Rhode Island was the thirteenth state admitted to the Union in 1790, was the first of the original thirteen colonies to announce independence from British rule and the last of the original thirteen colonies to ratify the U.S. Constitution. Currently, there are two Democratic members of the U.S. Senate, two Democratic members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 38 members of the Rhode Island State Senate and 75 members of the Rhode Island House of Representatives. As of September 2013, Rhode Island is one of 13 Democratic state government trifectas.
