US Attorney General to review new voting laws in Mississippi, Rhode Island and other states

The US Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. stated on Tuesday December 13, that the Justice Department would be looking more closely at new state laws which different civil rights groups said could hinder minority participation in next year’s elections. States such as Mississippi and Rhode Island have enacted laws which state that anyone voting must present state issued photo identification cards where as before residents were able to present social security cards or bank statements as proof of identification. Proponents of the stricter voting laws state that the measures are in place to decrease voter fraud where and opponents state that it makes it harder for minorities to vote. For now, the Justice Department has started to look at Texas and South Carolina election laws, looking at demographics and eligible voters who would need to get photo I.D. Holder commented that the reviews of the new laws will be thorough but also fair.[1]
