Located in the New England region of the United States, Rhode Island is officially known as the “State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.” Bordered by Massachusetts, Connecticut and the Atlantic Ocean, Rhode Island is the smallest state in the United States. Nicknamed “the Ocean State,” Rhode Island became the thirteenth state admitted to the Union in 1790. In addition, Rhode Island was the first of The Thirteen Colonies to announce independence from British rule and the last of The Thirteen Colonies to ratify the U.S. Constitution.
