Richard Eckstrom (b. 1948) is the current Republican South Carolina Comptroller General. He was first elected in 2002, and was re-elected in 2006 and 2010. His current term expires in 2014.[1]

Eckstrom is a CPA.[1] Prior to being elected treasurer, he was a practicing CPA with an international accounting firm.[1] Eckstrom is a graduate of the University of South Carolina. Following his graduation in 1970, he was commissioned in the Navy and conducted Oceanographic Research for three years.[1] Upon completion of military service, he earned an MBA and a Master of Accountancy from the University Of South Carolina School Of Business.[1] While a graduate student he also joined the Navy Reserve, retiring as a Captain in 1995. Eckstrom is a Brigadier General in the South Carolina State Guard.[1]

Political career

South Carolina Comptroller (2002-Present)

Eckstrom was first elected as South Carolina Comptroller General in 2002, and was re-elected in 2006 and 2010. His current term expires in 2014.[1]

South Carolina Treasurer (1994-1998)

From 1994 to 1998, Eckstrom served as State Treasurer. Eckstrom is the first CPA to hold the financial positions of treasurer or comptroller general.[1]

Eckstrom is eligible to run for re-election as South Carolina Comptroller General in 2014. He has not yet made his intentions in the race known.


Eckstrom won re-election as Comptroller General in the November 2, 2010 election.[2]
