Jones earned his Police Certification from Lansing Community College Police Academy and his B.A. in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University. He also attended Executive Leadership Training from Central Michigan University. He received further professional development training from the F.B.I. (Executive Leadership Training), the U.S. Department of Treasury (Crisis Management Training), and the U.S. Department of Justice (Correctional Leadership Training).  His professional experience includes working in law enforcement for 33 years, most of which were spent with the Eaton County Sheriff's Department, where he attained the ranks of sergeant, lieutenant and captain before being elected Sheriff in 2000.
