Helm served on the Board of Selectmen from 1990 to 1995. He joined the Vermont State House of Representatives in 1991. He has served in that position since, representing the Rutland-2 District.
Helm served in the United States Marine Corps from 1968 to 1970. He then worked as owner/operator of Castleton Gardens from 1975 to 1990. From 1990 to 2000, he as owner/operator of Castleton Landscape Company. He is currently a Real Estate Agent.
Helm earned his AA from Concord Commercial College in 1972.
