There were two seats on the school board up for election on September 17, 2013. Incumbents Dorothy Williams and Ronnie L. Treat filed for and won re-election in Zones 1 and 4, respectively. Williams ran unopposed, but Treat faced challenger Vincent P. Myrick, whom the incumbent defeated in the district's first contested race since 2011.[2]

The poverty rate in Pulaski County was 16.7% compared to 18.4% for the entire state. The median household income in Pulaski County was $45,897 compared to $40,149 for the state of Arkansas. The US Census also found that 31.3% of Pulaski County residents aged 25 years and older attained a Bachelor's degree compared to 19.6% in Arkansas.[3]
