Russell Olson is a Republican member of the South Dakota State Senate, representing District 8. He was first elected to the chamber in 2008. Until 2013, he served as State Senate Majority Leader.

In August 2013, Olson announced his resignation, effective September 30. He is leaving the Senate to take a position as CEO of Heartland Consumer Power District.[1][2]

Olson served in the South Dakota House of Representatives from 2006 to 2008.

Biography

Olson earned his B.S. in English/Political Science and his M.A. in Public Administration from the University of South Dakota. His professional experience includes working as a land use planner for the South Eastern Council of Governments, Executive Director for Lake Area Improvement Corporation, and manager of Community and Economic Development at Heartland Consumer Power District.

Olson won re-election in the 2012 election for South Dakota State Senate District 8. Olson ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on June 5 and defeated Charles Johnson (D) in the general election, which took place on November 6, 2012.[3]
