Samuel Thompson (b. July 31, 1935 ) is a Republican member of the New Jersey State Senate, representing District 12. He was first elected to the chamber in 2012.

Thompson is a former member of the New Jersey General Assembly, representing the 13th District from 1998 to 2012. He was moved into District 12 by the 2011 redistricting process.


Thompson graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry and Mathematics from the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. He went on to graduate with his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Louisiana State University. Thompson worked as director of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority from 1995-1997 and as a research scientist for six years by DuPont and J.P. Stevens. After that, he became the director of the New Jersey State Department of Health, Lab Division from 1972-1994.

Thompson ran in the 2013 election for New Jersey State Senate District 12. Thompson was unopposed in the June 4 Republican primary and is challenged by Raymond D. Dothard (D) in the general election which takes place on November 5, 2013.[1][2][3]

Thompson won the District 12 State Senate seat in 2011. He was unopposed for the June 7 Republican primary election. Republican incumbent Jennifer Beck is not running for re-election. Thompson defeated Robert Brown in the general election which took place on November 8, 2011. [4]

Running for re-election in the November 3, 2009 general election, Thompson received 38,823 votes (32%), defeating challengers Bob Brown, James Grenafege, and Sean Dunne.[5] He was bracketed with Amy Handlin.[6]
