A Santa Cruz County Property Tax Increase measure was on the May 18, 2010 ballot in Santa Cruz County.

This measure was approved

  • YES 4,383 (66.69%)Approveda
  • NO 2,189 (33.31%) [1]

This measure sought to increase local property taxes by 7 cents in order to help with supporting the local community college. The county expects a budget deficit on $1.6 million and were hoping that this tax, along with the state sales tax, will be passed so the county can manage for another fiscal year. Although both increases will not cover the entire shortfall the county would at least have fewer cuts. County officials will hold educational meetings to help inform voters on the issue.[2] In 2000 residents approved the creation of the community college district but then voted twice to not implement a tax to support the district. As a result, the county funded students to attend other community colleges in neighboring counties and students have had to pay out of county tuitions. Officials are hoping that the tax will be approved so that students can attend the local community college and pay less. The county then would also be able to use the money it had been spending to pay for out of county tuitions on other general fund purposes.[3]
