Hanna spent six years as a felony trial prosecutor for the Monroe County District Attorney's Office. He was later elected to the Monroe County Legislature where he became Deputy Majority Leader. He left when then-Governor George Pataki appointed him as the DEC Regional Director, and went on to become the lead trial attorney for County Executive Maggie Brooks.
Hanna earned his bachelor's degree in economics from Boston College and his J.D. from Wake Forest University. He and his wife Marlene live in Mendon, NY. They have two children, Katie and Aidan.

Hanna ran unopposed in the Republican primary on September 13, 2012; he also ran on the Conservative Party and Independence Party of New York State tickets. Hanna was defeated by Ted O'Brien (D) in the general election which took place on November 6, 2012.
