O'Toole previously ran in 2010 as a candidate for District 40 of the Missouri House of Representatives.

O'Toole ran for Missouri Treasurer in 2012. He was unopposed in the August 7 primary. Democratic incumbent Clint Zweifel and Republican state Rep. Cole McNary also ran unopposed in their respective parties.[1] O'Toole was defeated by incumbent Clint Zweifel in the general election on November 6, 2012.[2]
