Sheffield Nelson was a potential Republican or Independent candidate for Governor of Arkansas in the 2014 elections.[1]

Biography

Nelson worked for many years with Arkla, Inc., a natural gas company, starting as a management trainee. Over time he became Sales Manager, Vice-President, President, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.[2]

Nelson ran as a Republican for Governor of Arkansas in 1990 and lost Bill Clinton, and again in 1994 losing to Jim Guy Tucker.[3]

In recent years, Nelson has gained attention for his efforts to increase the Arkansas severance tax on natural gas, his former industry. In 2012, he led an effort to but the issue on the statewide ballot, but not enough signatures were collected.[1]

According to Talk Business Arkansas on February 12, 2013, Nelson was considering a bid for election to the Governor of Arkansas.[1]

The general election took place November 4, 2014.
