A Solon City Zoning Amendment measure was on the November 8, 2011 ballot in the city of Solon which is in Cuyahoga County.

This measure was approved

  • YES 6,882 (84.87%)Approveda
  • NO 1,227 (15.13%)[1]

This measure sought to rezone the designated piece of land from single family to industrial manufacturing in order to allow Nestle to expand onto adjacent property.[2] Nestle noted that the rezoning was important in order to allow the company to grow and expand its business, but residents raised concerns about the increase of traffic in the area. The measure was brought to the ballot through a petition drive led by Nestle, in four days they collected the needed signatures. Residents also noted that the issue seemed rushed as there was such a quick time between the petition and its verification for the ballot. Noting as well that there were other properties of Nestle which could have been expanded rather than the current one at issue which is in a residential area.[3]

Text of measure

The question on the ballot:

Shall the Ordinance providing for the rezoning of certain property in the City of Solon from the R-1-D (Single Family 1 Acre) to the I-2 (Industrial Manufacturing), to permit its use for a research and development facility operated by Nestle and to allow for future expansion of Nestle’s current uses on its adjacent property be approved?[4]
