Welcome to South Dakota on Ballotpedia!

Located in the Midwest region of the United States, South Dakota is bordered by Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, Nebraska, Montana and Wyoming. Nicknamed “the Mount Rushmore state,” South Dakota was the 40th state admitted to the Union in 1889. While Pierre is South Dakota’s capital, the city of Sioux Falls is South Dakota’s largest city. While known for its fertile lands and crops, South Dakota’s economy mainly relies on the tourism and defense industry. Currently, there are two members of the U.S. Senate, one Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives, 35 members of the South Dakota State Senate and 70 members of the South Dakota House of Representatives. As of September 2013, South Dakota is one of 24 Republican state government trifectas.

The structure of the South Dakota judicial system is laid out in Article V of the state constitution. The state court system is made up of the South Dakota Supreme Court, the South Dakota Circuit Courts and the South Dakota Magistrate Courts.

The federal court system is made up of the United States District Court for the District of South Dakota and the District Court of South Dakota Bankruptcy Court. Appeals from these courts go to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
