Located in the Midwest region of the United States, South Dakota is bordered by Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, Nebraska, Montana and Wyoming. Nicknamed “the Mount Rushmore State,” South Dakota became the 40th state when it was admitted to the Union in 1889. While Pierre is South Dakota’s capital, the city of Sioux Falls is South Dakota’s largest city. Known for its fertile lands and crops, South Dakota’s economy mainly relies on the tourism and defense industry. Currently, there are two members of the U.S. Senate, one Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives, 35 members of the South Dakota State Senate and 70 members of the South Dakota House of Representatives. As of September 2013, South Dakota is one of 24 Republican state government trifectas.
