The South Dakota Commissioner of School and Public Lands is responsible for the leasing and sale of surface and mineral rights on state lands, including lands originally designated for public education. The revenue from these sales and leases are put into the Permanent Trust Fund for educational funding in South Dakota, and this fund is further managed by the commissioner's office.[10]
