The South Dakota secretary of state election will take place on November 4, 2014. Incumbent Jason Gant (R) was first elected in 2010 and eligible to seek re-election in 2014. However, on September 11, 2013 he announced he would not seek a second term.[1]

South Dakota is one of 21 states with a mixed primary system. Parties decide who may vote. Registered Democrats and unaffiliated voters may vote in the Democratic primary. Only registered Republicans may vote in the Republican primary.[2]
