Revision as of 17:59, 6 August 2012

Members of Congress are appropriated funds for staff. There are approximately 10,000 US House staffers.[1]

At Ballotpedia, we looked in the summer of 2012 to examine how much Senators and Representatives pay their staff in Fiscal Year 2011. The organization Legistorm compiles and aggregates the salary information, using official House and Senate records. Legistorm posts the sum salaries that each Senator and Congressperson paid their Congressional staff for Fiscal Year 2011. Different politicians have different sized staffs based on their needs and therefore some numbers are larger than others. It is also important to keep in mind that each state has a different number of Representatives based on their population.[2]

We set out to take that data and perform basic analyses of the totals, including:

  • Average staff salary by party
  • Top 10 congressional staff salaries by party
  • Top 5 states with the highest average staff salaries
