Issues

Drug testing

Legislation introduced in the Kansas state house and state senate would bring punitive measures against drug users receiving government benefits if there is "reasonable suspicious" drug use exists. The measures would apply to both welfare recipients and Kansas lawmakers, although the legislation is unclear as to what would happen if a legislator tested positive for narcotics.[2] Clayton expressed outrage over the special privileges given to lawmakers. "Drugs are against the law, and we shouldn’t be doing them while we’re legislators," Clayton said. "The only reason why I voted in favor of that was because it would hold me to the same standard. I don’t want to do to other people what I wouldn’t hold to myself."[2]

Campaign themes

Clayton's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[1]

Strengthen Education

  • Excerpt:"She understands not only that our children deserve strong schools, but also that by maintaining high standards, we attract better business growth opportunities for all of Johnson County."

Promote Local Control

  • Excerpt:"Stephanie believes in limited government in all aspects, both socially and fiscally."

Keep Taxes Reasonable

  • Excerpt:"Stephanie believes in the “three-legged-stool” philosophy of taxation for Kansans."

Protect Local Businesses

  • Excerpt:"Stephanie wants to protect businesses from intrusive, burdensome governmental regulations. The fiscal future of Kansas depends on Johnson County remaining as an economic engine, and will back initiatives that promote the county’s role in those endeavors."

Support Alternative Energy

  • Excerpt:"Stephanie believes that clean energy solutions not only benefit the quality of life in Johnson County, but also lead to increased efficiency overall. Responsible use of resources keeps costs down, and innovation in this field can also mean more American jobs."
