Campaign themes

Smith's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]

Jobs and the Economy

  • Excerpt: "I believe that the real job creators are people just like you and me who buy products off store shelves every single day. That's how we're going to fix our economy; by being able to buy things off of our want-to list, not just our have-to list."

Education and Schools

  • Excerpt: "Our property tax dollars are going to be making up the difference for these voucher schools, and it's going to hurt our kids, our schools, and our pocketbooks. We can't afford to fund two separate school systems when we can barely afford the one we have now."

  • Excerpt: "Every citizen in Wisconsin deserves the right to have access to quality, affordable healthcare. Had our state's leadership not turned down the federal medicaid expansion, an additional 85,000 people could have been covered by BadgerCare. Instead, the Wisconsin taxpayers are stuck with the bill, paying an additional $119 million that could have been put to good use elsewhere. We can't let our current state leadership keep playing politics with our health."

Protecting Agriculture

  • Excerpt: "We need to do all we can to promote and protect Wisconsin’s agriculture. Wisconsin’s $60 billion agriculture and food sector accounts for 10% of the jobs in the state. I have a proven track record of standing up for farmers and rural Wisconsin."

Legislative scorecards are used to evaluate elected public officials based on voting record. Some scorecards are created by political advocacy groups with a focus on specific issues, while others are developed by newspapers and are broad in scope. Scorecards are meant to be used as a tool for voters to have a quick picture of whether their views align with a particular legislator's record.

Because scorecards can be specific to particular issues or general to a state’s legislative term, for example, each report should be considered on its own merits. Each entity that publishes these reports uses different methodologies and definitions for the terms used.

An overview for scorecards in all 50 states can be found on this page. To contribute to the list of Wisconsin scorecards, email suggestions to
