Landek earned his BA in Public Administration from Roosevelt University. He worked as a park district commissioner for the State of Illinois from 1975 to 1996. He has served as Mayor of Bridgeview, Illinois, since 1999.

Landek is running for re-election to the Illinois State Senate in 2012 in District 12. He defeated Raul Montes, Jr. in the Democratic Primary on March 20, 2012. Current District 12 incumbent Martin Sandoval is not running for re-election in District 12 but is running in District 11.[2] Landek is unopposed in the general election on November 6, 2012.
